Around Lake Traun
Holidays amid mountains and lakes
Traunsee, Austria’s deepest lake, is in a picturesque location amid vast meadows, forests and the impressive Traunstein massif. 1 hour a way by car from the UNESCO World Heritage region Hallstatt Dachstein Salukammergut. Often referred to as ‘Lacus felix’ by the Romans, Lake Traun and its surroundings still promise happiness to relaxation-seeking people bent down by the pressures of modern life. Lake Traun at the heart of the Salzkammergut region is just perfect for relaxing, swimming, surfing, sailing and waterskiing. In addition, the Traunsee area lends itself to walking, hiking and mountain biking. Long-standing customs and traditions combine with an extensive range of activities and events in terms of culture and the arts. Winter comes with outstanding skiing and snowboarding in the Feuerkogel family ski area, as well as charming Christmas markets. Cross-country skiing enthusiasts will find hundreds of kilometers of tracks and trails winding their ways through the picture postcard winter scenery.
Lake Traun: Swimming, walking and hiking!
Crystal-clear, shades of turquoise, premium quality and pleasant temperatures are the features that can be attributed not only to Lake Traun, but also to the Langbathsee and Offensee lakes, all of which are fed by fresh spring water. At the sight of the three scenic lakes one won’t resist the temptation of a refreshing soak. While Lake Traun down in the valley is the preferred destination of sailors, surfers and wakeboarders, the Traunstein massif and the Höllengebirge mountain range are highly popular among walking, hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts. From Ebensee the Feuerkogel cable car whisks outdoor enthusiasts up to an altitude of 1,600 meters within no time, thus offering easy access to a variety of trailheads, e.g. for tours to Europakreuz, Alberfeldkogel, Helmeskogel or Großer Höllenkogel.
A holiday in the Traunsee area allows golf aficionados to improve their handicaps on the scenic 18-hole golf course at Kirchham. Those interested in culture and art are not to miss out on a visit to Gmunden, famous for its ceramics, and all the beautiful castles and monasteries in the Traunsee area, as well as innumerable events of all sorts. Another must-see is the baroque Capuchin monastery at Gmunden, and the charming Seeschloss Ort, which sits on a small island. Accommodations range from family-friendly holiday apartments to cozy lakefront hotels offering all mod cons.
