Arrival by bike
Nice and safe: "Ostuferradwanderweg"
For those coming from the north with their bikes, to the Salzkammergut lake, there is something you should know: The safest way to reach Lake Hallstatt by bike is definitely the route along the “Ostuferradwanderweg” (East shore hiking and bike trail). This route to Hallstatt and Obertraun, is not only scenic, but also offers lots of resting opportunities: From benches directly on the shores of the lake to a cosy stop at the iconic “Seeraunzn”.
Pleasure all the way
The “Ostuferradwanderweg”, which leads directly to Obertraun, is particularly family-friendly and also older pedal pushers will be delighted. For those who wish to take their bike to Hallstatt, a crossing with the ferry boat from Hallstatt train station is recommended. An unforgettable experience.
Of course, you can also continue your journey via Obertraun and along the southern shore of Lake Hallstatt to the world famous salt mining town.
A small tip: to be on the safe side, those who are travelling with their families should avoid the route along the main road on the western shore of Lake Hallstatt. For especially during summer and autumn there are a lot of coaches and fast cars along this narrow winding road.
From the east into the World Heritage
For those travelling by bike from the north or south-east, i.e. the route over the Ennstal, Pürgg, Bad Mitterndorf and Bad Aussee, we recommend the “Koppentalradweg”. The well-developed route leads through the gorge-like Koppental, in places even directly along the river Traun. An experience for all montainbike fans and a clever alternative to riding along the main road over the Koppenpass - without bike path. The family-friendly cycle path also offers some surprises: expeditions into legendary cave worlds and delicious intermediate stops. Whether you choose to continue along the main road or through the picturesque Koppenwinkel, the journey by bike to the southern shore of Lake Hallstatt will inspire you.
A small tip: For those who want to continue to Hallstatt we highly recommend the “Ostuferradwanderweg”: Uncomplicated and family-friendly to Hallstattrain station and then cross with the ferry boat.
Or as an alternative: From Obertraunn on the well-developed cycle path along the main road to Hallstatt. Whatever you choose, "Have a good trip"!
