BergeSeen Trail Stage 14

From Bad Aussee to Ödensee

From the tourism office in the centre of Bad Aussee (post office building), the trail heads south over the Traun bridge and then follows the Bahnhofstraße for a short distance. From there, the route turns left, goes along the Hugo Cordignano Promenade and then follows the Ofnerstraße to the Bahnhofpromenade to arrive at the train station. From there, the trail follows the Koppenstraße to the east, crosses over the Traun and goes along the Sießreithstraße to the Kalßwirt restaurant.

The trail continues along the street for 300 metres and then goes right over the Traun (Kainisch Traun). The route follows the river for a long distance – first to the right of the river, then to the left and finally to the right again – until a forest road turns uphill to the right. Following this road, the trail arrives at the Ödenseestraße. Going along this street for a short time, the route reaches Lake Ödensee and a rest point at the tavern Gasthof Kohlröserlhütte am Ödensee.

From Ödensee to Steinitzenalm

From the Gasthof Kohlröserlhütte, the trail follows a beautiful path toward the northeast along the lake to a forest road. The route goes left along this road for 400 metres to arrive at a fork. Continuing right for 200 metres, the trail then ascends to the left through the forest until reaching the forest road. From there, the path heads downhill along the street to Mühlreith (sawmill).

At the sawmill, the trail heads uphill to the right along the asphalt street and then along the flat terrain of the meadow to a crossroads. The snack station Stieger is located 100 metres to the left. From the junction, the trail heads uphill mostly through the forest along a meadow road to the picturesque location of the Steinitzenalm snack station (elevation: approx. 980 metres).

From the Steinitzenalm to Bad Mitterndorf

From the alpine hut, the route ascends to the south arriving at a forest road. The trail heads left along the road, goes straight ahead at the junction and then descends through the Almgraben valley to a junction. From here, the route continues to the left along a flat gravel path over level meadow terrain by the Salza River to the village centre of Bad Mitterndorf.

Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination? Tips: Hiking in spring

The days in the Salzkammergut are getting longer. The temperatures are finally getting warmer, more and more hikers are heading to the mountains. But be careful: Especially in spring, there are a few things to consider: There is often still a lot of snow on the mountains, so be careful when crossing snowfields. After winter, you are usually still a bit "rusty", so warm up accordingly in advance and plan your tour carefully. Let your host know the planned route. This can lead to quick help in an emergency. But there's more to consider:
