Hiking to Löckermoos High Moor Gosau

Where peace resides!

Some say "Löckermoos", others call it "Löckernmoos". It doesn't matter whether you say the "n" or not, it doesn't change anything: The high moor high above the Gosau Valley is one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in all of Austria and has even been one of the favourites of the successful ORF TV program “Neun Plätze – Neun Schätze“, (Nine Places - Nine Treasures), which is usually broadcast on Austria's national holiday, 26th October. One more reason to visit Gosau at the foot of the Dachstein.

Seductive legend

Speaking of ice and snow: the high moor above the grindstone stores was formed after the end of the Ice Age. The data on climate development stored in the peat layer and highly specialized moor vegetation are the subject of numerous guided tours through the high moor.
During such a guided tour, the interested nature lover also becomes acquainted with the legend of the "Löcker worm". According to an old legend, a white worm about three meters long lives in the small Löcker Lake, but only a few people have ever seen it. Furthermore, the management of the alpine pastures on the Grubalm is a current topic. The high moor and the grindstone quarries can be hiked either individually or with knowledgeable experts in a guided tour.

Quite fruity

Blueberries, cranberries and mountain pines have settled on the wet moorland. Together they form an almost impenetrable thicket. In the protection of this thicket, a very special life has developed over thousands of years. The blue sapphire dragonfly and the water strider are the most striking representatives of the animal world. They testify to the fact that pure nature can still be found here. Please take special care of this sensitive habitat. Do not picnic at this spot and do not, under any circumstances, wash yourself in the Löcker lake. You would disturb the sensitive biotope.

Hiking to the Löckermoos Lake

From the Gosau valley there are several marked hiking trails to the Löckermoos and the grind stone quarries. We decide on the tour that starts at the Gosau Hintertal car park. First we follow the forest road there over a small bridge. Then we follow a small hiking trail in the direction of "Schleifsteinbrüche & Löckermoos". Again and again we cross the parallel forest road.
On we go!

After about 2 hours we have reached the “Badstubnhütte” (1344m), which is often managed in summer and autumn and invites you to a comfortable rest and an extensive tour of the large alpine area.

Well rested, we then make our wy to the Löckermoos high moor.
We follow the well-signposted path through the grindstone quarries and climb over a steep, but well-developed, slope up to the “Löckersee”. After about 30 to 45 minutes we have reached our hiking destination. Now it's time to take a deep breath and let your mind wander.
Directly at the romantic “Löckersee”, several benches invite you to take another rest. Enjoy the absolute tranquillity, the majestic view of the tines of the Gosaukamm and the unique water reflections in the small mountain lake.

The way back is via the “Badstubnhütte” and the well-developed forest road down into the Gosau valley. After about 90 minutes we again reach the parking lot in Hintertal. The day tour to “Löckermoos” with Löcker Lake is one of the most beautiful hikes in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut.

But be careful: Especially in spring, there are a few things to consider: There is often still a lot of snow on the mountains, so be careful when crossing snowfields. After winter, you are usually still a bit "rusty", so warm up accordingly in advance and plan your tour carefully. Let your host know the planned route. This can lead to quick help in an emergency.
