Bahn frei! Eisstockschießen im Salzkammergut
Off-Piste Action
When the winter months arrive, the familiar sounds of ice sticks colliding with each other can be heard everywhere as men and women alike skate across the slippery ice surface. Because when evening comes - after skiing or cross-country skiing - people meet again at the ice rink for curling, and you don't just have to watch the locals, you can also try it yourself! Have you already tried this traditional winter sport? Curling is most comparable to boggia, but the throwing technique on the ice is not so easy. Combined with a trip to the Hallstatt World Heritage Museum or a day on the Gosau ski slopes, this excursion is suitable as an evening programme or combined with a snowshoe tour as a day trip.
Curling in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut is a modern sport despite centuries of tradition. A team consists of four players. It is counted in "stick points". If you want to win, you have to move or shoot away the ice sticks of the opposing team.
Pure fun: curling for groups
Sweep your friends or colleagues off the rink: curling is ideal for groups, associations, businesses or clubs that want to do something special in winter. This sociable winter pleasure - popular with young and old - unites through team spirit and lots of fun! For those who would like to try their hand at this traditional sport but still need a few tips from experts, the Dachstein Salzkammergut Holiday Region offers "Curling for Groups". Origin in Northern Europe
Historically, curling - first mentioned in Scandinavia in the 13th century - is one of the oldest winter sports of all. Initially practised among the local (male) population with hand-turned ice sticks made of various types of wood, curling advanced to become an Olympic discipline.
Today, championships are contested very seriously on a professional level. Clubs or businesses also shoot out a meal on the ice rink.
Meet for the popular "Bradlschiessen" where teams, consisting of four people, compete for a roast port dinner.
The encouraging and sometimes scolding shouts echo far and wide through the winter landscape. They cheer the shooters on to the well-aimed use of their ice sticks turned from maple or pear wood. Young and old alike enjoy this sport for many a winter afternoon.
