Panoramic view waterfall wall in Obertraun
Discover the Wasserfallwand
Obertraun on Lake Hallstatt is a paradise for hikers and mountaineers. The Wasserfallwand (waterfall wall) above Obertraun is amongst one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the UNESCO World Heritage Region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut. Although visitors will be surprisd that there has not actually been a waterfall here for many years, after approximately a one hour tour, hikers will be rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view over Obertraun and Lake Hallstatt.
Severe mountainous outlook!
Our walk to the Obertraun Wasserfallwand (waterfall wall) starts by the Catholic Church in Obertraun. We follow the road uphill for about 200 meters to the Obertraun cemetery. From here we can enjoy our first view of the beautiful Lake Hallstatt and the Obertraun bay. We continue on the “Obertraun Höhenweg” high-level trail, which starts opposite the cemetery. We follow the narrow path for about 5 minutes, into the Obertraun valley, then turn left. From here we walk about 40 minutes to reach our destination where we are welcomed by a red-white-red flag and some benches that invite us to stay and contemplate. Far away from any hustle and bustle, we enjoy a wonderful view over the Obertraun basin and Lake Hallstatt and the surrounding mountains.
Our hiking tip: Since the ascent to Obertraun Wasserfallwand (waterfall wall) does not take very long this short hike is perfect on a beautiful summer’s afternoon. The forest provides plenty of shade and many cool moments. Due to parts of the trail being covered in gravel, we recommend that anyone taking the tour to the Obertraun view point, should wear sturdy footwear. The hike is especially nice in the colorful autumn and crisp green spring!
