For a good decade and a half, the Salzkammergut Archaeological Working Group has been unearthing finds from the Copper Age, Urnfield Period, Hallstatt and Latène Periods to the Roman Empire. The most recent excavations along the mule track, which led from Hallstatt through the Koppen to the south, delivered sensational results.
The Kammerhof in Bad Aussee was first mentioned in a document in 1395. Construction probably began at this time. The building has been rebuilt several times in the course of its history, but the original building fabric has been largely preserved. Window and door jambs as well as the fireplace surround date from around 1530. A special feature of the Ausseer Kammerhof is the Kaisersaal with its frescoes (created 1740–1756) with landscapes of Bad Aussee, Altaussee and Grundlsee. Emperor Frederick III and Emperor Maximilian spent the night here. Until 1926, the Kammerhof served as the Salzamt building. In 1971, the house was acquired by the market town of Bad Aussee. In the course of the rebuilding of the spa centre in the same year, the original courtyard wall, all outbuildings and the northern staircase were demolished.
Collection and exhibition
The systematic development of the local history museum with a focus on the history and folk culture of the Ausseerland began in 1978. Today's collection focuses on archaeology, salt and local history, traditional costumes, folk music, customs, fossils and speleology. Particularly noteworthy parts of the collection are finds from the Salzofenhöhle, a hunting station of Palaeolithic people in the Totes Gebirge, numerous relics from the Bronze and Iron Ages recovered in the Ausseerland and finds from late Roman settlements in the Koppental and on the Altaussee Michlhallberg (Sandling massif).

Guided tours are also possible through the Kammerhof Museum in Bad Aussee. Please note, however, that these must be registered in good time in advance. It is best to do so three to four days before the date. Guided tours, e.g. in English or French, are also possible by appointment in good time.
